1935 Flathead Water Pumps

Hi. I am new to the forum - thanks for the opportunity. I have a 1935 Model 48 with the 32-36 style water pumps. The driver's side pump is spitting water from behind the pulley. I am considering whether I rebuild myself, have a rebuild done, or buy rebuilt pumps. I've been wrenching on cars for years and do my own work, so DIY would be an option. What is the recommended path? Are there any pitfalls or good guides to working on these pumps? Many thanks.

Can't help you about DIY for water pumps but here are two excellent rebuilders. If you are not worried about originality for a point judged show car, the simplest thing to do might be to go with these pumps which utilize new castings, improved bearings and seals. Most of these pumps have been rebuilt a 100 times over the years. The gap between the impeller and the casting needs to be tight something like .010 as I recall. You could throw a cat through the gap on a lot of the old pumps. They may not leak, but they don't pump water very well. Save yourself a lot of grief, buy a new pair of pumps. Dennis Carpenter, Fryers, Skip Haney and others handle them.

I bought some new water pumps from Dennis Carpenter several years ago for a 1953 Ford V-8. These pumps proved to be problem-free over 15K miles of service. I would recommend them if you intend to drive your car trouble-free over long distances.

Thanks all for the great advice. I really appreciate it. This is a family car that my father in law passed on to my wife. I am checking if he is concerned about originality. If not the Dennis Carpenter pumps seem like a good option at $135 each. I'll post again when we make a decision.

The pump pictured does not appear like 35. Several differences. One is, 35 has a special brass covered special zerk fitting that extends straight out of the casting where as 36 is angled rearward like yours. There is a supplier of 35 pumps with modern seals and they do not need to be lubed. Also Skip Heney in Fla rebuilds your pump castings with modern hi flow impellers. 35 pump body has the 48-XXXX part number indented into the casting. IMO check with Skip to see if he has both original 35 pump bodies and have them rebuilt by him (they need to be lubed) or buy the new cast pumps.

Thanks. I'll check the casting for numbers to see if that is the case. The car had a cracked block replaced in the 50s so these might not be the original parts. Any ideas how much Skip Heney charges for a rebuild and what the turn time is? Will the new-fangled Carpenter pumps fit 32-36 inclusive? I would think so but ...
