36 flathead engine vibration

I have 36 flathead in my 37 pickup. At idle and low rmps it runs great. when I get over 35 mph it starts to vibrate badly. It will also do it when just revving it up. Does anyone have any idea what would cause this problem?

As a ‘36 engine in a ‘37 may involve pulley and belt modifications, I’d first look at that system and including the water pumps themselves as to the cause of vibration. Put your hand on one pump then the other, you may feel a bump-bump corresponding with the vibration. Just a guess, and the cheapest fix of the many possible causes.

I think I am my own gremlin in this problem. I was thinking the engine came out of a 36 coupe with a 9 inch clutch. I had an 11 inch clutch and pressure plate, and flywheel form another newer engine and I put it on when I installed the engine forgetting to have it checked for balance. I am beginning to think the problem is my poor judgement in to checking the balance on those parts. I would still like your thoughts on this before I pull the engine and check these parts.

Most of the Ford type pressure plates (Long style) have weights on the outside which move with engine RPM, this causes increased downward force on the PP to eliminate any clutch slippage. Adding an 11" clutch and pressure plate which your transmission was not designed for may be your problem. The weights on the pressure plate may be hitting the inside of the transmission bell housing as engine RPM increases. This is a very common problem when switching to a much larger PP and clutch. Has the problem always been there after install of the engine? Do check out other possible causes before doing major work to remove the PP

I think you are probably right , I will take your advise and put a smaller clutch and pressure plate to see what happens. I have had the engine in and out of the truck enough times , so one more will not be a big deal. Thanks for the advise.

vibration
if you think it is the water pumps,
simple fix,
loosen the fan belt and remove,
then run the motor, and see if the vibration is gone,
this vibration, all of a sudden start,

To rule out water pumps, remove belt, start it up....easy check
