What are the the four threaded 3/8" holes on the front of the block on either side of the timing gear cover?

All 221,239,256 32-53 V8 blocks have these threaded holes. Their purpose was to allow any full-sized V8 to use the bolt-on 32 front motor mounts. Since the early 221's had their water pumps on the cylinder heads, there needed to be a mounting point for the mounts. Ford simply included them on all later flathead blocks.

Front motor mounts/water inlets for '34 to '36 also used those four threaded bolt holes. There was a lot of interchangeability purposely designed into these flatheads. John This message was edited by JM on 8-17-13 @ 7:33 PM
