The needle on my dash ammeter does not show charging when the engine is running or discharging when the lights are pulled on Any ideas to trouble shoot Thanks John

There are a several causes for the factory ammeter to not register when you have obvious reasons to believe it should. 1. The wire which connects the ammeter to the electrical circuit may be disconnected. 2. The ammeter may be broken. 3. Your battery may be fully charged and doesn't show a charge or a discharge. 4. Your voltage regulator may need adjusting or is defective. 5. Your generator may not be putting out any current.

Along with what has been mentioned above take a voltage reading at the battery with the car running. Should be anywhere from 6.5 to 7.2 volts. If that is the case the charging system is working and the gauge likely is faulty. If you replace the gauge watch the direction of the wiring going thru the back of the gauge. If you go in the wrong direction, it will read backwards. That I learned the hard way.
