I have a 1949 Ford Custom with what I believe is a flathead truck V8. The heads are 8RT heads and the serial number stamped in the block is 41733. Both water pumps leak and one is seized. The pulleys on the pumps are aligned but they have different shapes. I'd like to replace them but am not sure what to order. I'm not sure of the year of the engine. The heads are 24 bolt heads, not studs. does the information I've provided here tell anything about the year of the engine so I can order the correct water pumps? Thanks in advance for any help in identifying this engine.

Olddy, Your engine could very well be from a truck, but the 8RT heads could also have been added to an engine from a car. The mounting of the 8RT truck water pumps is very different than the mounting of car pumps, so it is almost certain that you have standard wide-belt car pumps. Car pumps went to the narrow belts in 1950. A photo of your pumps would help confirm. 1949 Ford car water pumps are readily available from the standard vendors, including Dennis Carpenter Restoration Parts https://www.dennis-carpenter.com/. You can compare pictures of the different pumps on the website. Ken Ken

From your photos it looks like you have 8ba car pumps but not positive. The photo of the single pump is an 8rt truck pump. The photo with the 2 pumps with gaskets is 8ba car pumps. The photo with the red pump shows an 8ba car pump and an 8rt truck pump (the red one) Truck pumps are wide belt and car pumps are narrow belt and yes the pulleys are different diameters. But if you have narrow belt pumps with mounting ears similar to 8rt truck pumps then you have Merc 0cm pumps but I doubt that. From your photos; the first one more closely resembles what I have. The belt on mine is (5/8"). Does anyone know if anything can be learned by the number stamped into the block?

Odds are that it is a numbering system that a business used to identify the block when it was remanufactured. Ford did not stamp numbers on original engine blocks for the V-8 era. A VIN number (or sequence number) was stamped on the driver's side frame rail and also the top of the transmission housing though.
