What is the best way to have a newly purchased old car transported 3,000 miles. The car in question is a runner and could possibly be driven that distance if one took the time to baby it over all those miles. I have heard horror stories of people who have had cars transported by commercial carriers. Some of them include the car being transported part way to the new destination by the original carrier, then being offloaded and transferred to additional carrier(s) before reaching their final destination. Any help in answering the question would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Several reliable independent transporters with excellent reputations can be found on the HAMB and Ford Barn. A lot of factors come into play. Where is the pickup point and drop off point? How close to a major interstate? Open or enclosed trailer? When does it need to happen. Many don't transport in the winter months due to less than favorable road conditions. ______________ No signature

You don't know the condition of "the runner". It may be good for local trips but can you trust it for 3000 miles? The problem with an old car failing on the road is finding mechanics with the time and the knowledge to fix old cars (carburetors wet out of production 40 years ago; early Ford distributors are unique). Trying to get a transporter on the road is problematic. What risk are you more comfortable with?

In the past I have used Passport Transport and Reliable. Also check some of the major moving companies. I think you will find a good moving company will not be cheap. This message was edited by trjford8 on 1-14-26 @ 9:36 AM

I have used Passport for nearly all of my moves. They have been perfect in all aspects. Reliable has been okay but had one terrible experience with them so refuse to use them again. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

I agree with what both Tom and Mike have stated above. I have used InterCity Lines Auto Transport and Horseless Carriage, with excellent results from both. Fine, professional service. Coast to coast transport will be expensive, but good luck. Tom

I had used Blue Highways once. Never again. They were considerably cheaper to haul three of my coupes. This was one case when I got what I paid for. Carcrazy, please, for your own sake, don't go with "cheap". Mike "Kube" Kubarth

Mike is correct, don't go with "cheap". Also never use an open transport. I learned that the hard way when I first had one transported.

The transporter may be very careful with your car, but things can go wrong. No matter who you go with, make sure that you have your own insurance on the car and make sure your agent knows that the car is being transported. Dealing with any of the transportation companies insurance can be mind boggling if there is damage to the car. It is much easier to have your insurance subrogate the claim. Tom
