Topic: Replacing Bushings in 1950 Front End

I'm attempting to replace upper/lower, inner/outer bushings and seals in my 1950 station wagon (all stock front end). While I got the old ones out without too much trouble and the new parts appear to be the right ones, since my old seals were pretty much "rubber mush" when I took them out, I can't confirm the new ones are correct - but would assume they are. I'm starting with the lower/outer bushings/seals, but when I try to install them, together they are some 2-7/8" in length and my gap for them in the lower control arm is only 2-3/8." While I'm sure I can get a little squeeze from the "rubber tire" looking seals, I don't think I'm ever gonna get a 1/2" total squeeze to get them in. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a "trick" or something I need to do to make that happen? See photos

One thing you can try is to get some 5/16" 18 threaded bar stock, a couple of nuts and two flat washers to hold the hollow parts together while squashing them down to fit within the space available.
Liberally coat the rubber parts with silicon spray lubricant.
Place this compressed assembly next to the area where they have to fit in the arm assembly and slide them into that space while removing the threaded bar and the flat washers.
Once you have these components located within the arm assembly, insert the bolt and tighten it as required.
