Tried to start yesterday. Cranked a bit and then nothing. Makes a slight sound then start pedal is pressed. Ammeter wiggles a bit. Battery voltage drops from 6.5 v. to about 5.2 v. when pedal is pressed. Battery is new and fully charged. I'll try rocking it in gear to see if starter is engaged with flywheel. Any advice before I start tearing into it?

It could just be that the bolts that hold the starter to the engine have come loose allowing the starter gear to jamb into the flywheel ring gear. Check these bolts and tighten as required.

Could also be a defective foot start switch. Put a voltmeter on the starter terminal and see if there is voltage when the start switch is depressed.

Rocked in gear and starter now works. I assume I'll have to pull the starter to examine the Bendix. Comments?

It is not uncommon for these starters to hang up on the flywheel on occasion, especially after siting for long periods of time. Do as carcrazy suggested above and be mindful on how often this happens. If it is fairly consistent, pulling the starter for inspection of the Bendix gear and flywheel will be necessary... Make that "sitting for long periods of time" This message was edited by MG on 11-16-25 @ 11:32 AM

And perhaps this reinforcement bracket at the front of the starter did not get re-installed at some point. It was missing from my car. https://thirdgenauto.com/product/1932-53-ford-starter-to-oil-pan-reinforcement-bracket/

Another project! No bracket installed so I'll order one along with other items I need. Thanks for your help.
