Perhaps the attached picture will help... Struggling to get engine to start..... am getting spark.. have rebuilt helmet style distributor installed....have fuel.. Beginning to think that cam and crankshaft are out of alignment.. engine was apparently rebuilt years ago and not used... I have removed cylinder heads and can verify # 1 is at TDC with both valves closed. The crankshaft gear is in its proper orientation (yellow dot in picture) I cannot find the elusive triangle on the fiber camshaft gear to align with the crankshaft gear. I have put yellow marking on cam gear.. Is the place the yellow mark on the perimeter of cam gear, the spot that should be lined up with the yellow dot on the crank? In its present location, the rotor in the distributor has passed the #1 spark plug contact by a fair bit ( 20 degrees of rotation) Checked a spare distributor I have and internals of the rebuilt distributor are in correct locations. Looking for guidance... Thanks Rudy

I think that your diagnosis is correct and your yellow marks should align. Tom

My 21 stud camshaft with pressed on fiber gear looks the same as yours, with a line for the timing mark. I agree with TomO on the misalignment.

On your 1937 Ford Flathead V-8 the line on the camshaft gear should line up with the dot on the crankshaft gear when the #1 cylinder is at TDC on the power stroke.

To find true top dead center of #1 cylinder and to degree your camshaft, you might find this video interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGbH3iXkvcw

The cam and it's gear inner mark appear to be correct as well as the outer mark on the cam gear. There is usually a very good mark on the crank gear, which I can not see in your photo. Don't expect TDC to also coincide with these gear timing marks. Do not expect the timing marks to be triangles, they may be or maybe not. If you have the crank gear marked correctly it should align with the outer mark on the cam gear.

I am having a lot of brain checks lately. After 40 coupe pointed out the crank gear missing mark, I cannot see any marks on the crank gear either. There should be a mark on the tooth of the crank gear that will line up with the cam gear. You must be on the compression stroke for them to line up. Watch for the intake valve to close, and then the piston should be going to the top of the cylinder. When it approaches the top, you should be able to see the marks coming into alignment. Thanks, yes it is difficult to see. The yellow paint on the crank gear is where the timing dot is.. The big blob of paint has obscured the "dot" punched into the gear.
