I have read that I should shim the clutch arms to avoid distorting the plate, but am unsure of how to do this. I removed the engine and would like to replace the pilot bearing (or bushing...not sure if one is preferred) so I am ready to remove the clutch...any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks

Remove the mounting bolts a little at a time going around the pressure plate. Use the same idea to tighten the bolts. The bolts have a special shoulder so keep them safe for reuse.

Place small nuts between the arms and the pressure plate housing to act as shims. Remove the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel slowly and evenly. This will hold the nuts in place, preventing the pressure plate arms from bottoming out. Doing this will make it easier to re-install the pressure plate. Remove the nuts when the pressure plate is installed. The pressure plate to flywheel bolts should have a shoulder, so that the pressure plate does not bear against the threaded portion of the bolt, possibly shearing the bolt. Ford used both pilot bushings or bearings over the years. The bearings don't wear much , but have been known to seize from rust or debris. The choice is yours.
