I have read where some hot rodders switched from studs and nuts to hex head cap screws for heads and main bearing caps. I am building a stroked and bored 59A and wanted to see preferences. I am doing a 4.125 stroke with a 3.313 bore. Thanks in advance for the responses.

In the early 60's on my "5/16 by quarter" 59A, I used ALLEN socket-head capscrews. The reason was that they were (at the time) tougher than the available grade-5 hex head. They also looked "kind of cool" with my Edelbrock Aluminum heads. That said, I would NEVER substitute a capscrew on a main bearing cap, and I agree with TomO that studs and nuts are much better "clamps", as the fine-thread on the "nut-end" can generate a much greater clamping force on the heads than the coarse threads can tolerate in the cast iron block. In your 362 inch stroker, I believe I'd use studs. I'm sure ARP has some recommendations for you.

I have a stroked flat motor. My head bolt are a grade 8. They are a caterpillar bolt. The head size is bigger than standard bolts. I also have the caterpillar thick washers to. Our full race flat motor has same bolts. Brought to my attention from an old hot rodder. Cat part # 1D4558. Try them.

We use ARP studs on all our rebuilds. The extra cost is worth these items.
