Should there by some sort of sealing washer in the timing cover area where the distributor mounts? It seems like oil would leak out without something in that area. Thanks

The "posthole" distributor used from 49-53 doesn't need a seal at the base. If oil leaks there, you may have overfilled the crankcase.
