Just want to verify I have the correct wheels on my 48 F1 They are 16x4.5 and painted black. Also - are white walls considered origonal on this truck? Any help appreciated.

The wheels are correct for 600 x 16 tires, but no whitewalls were sold with the trucks, to my knowledge. In fact, very few cars were so equipped before the "new" Fords for '49 . This always seemed strange, as the dealers packed the new cars beginning in '46 with every accessories known to man. I suspect any tires were still scarce following the war.

THe wheels should be body color, and as said above, wheels are correct size and no white walls. To determine correct wheels, where the center is riveted to the outer part, there should not be any space where you can technically see thru. It was basically a solid style wheel. Alot of these disappeared when people changed the rims to later types that were used on 50-60's passenger cars. Barry 50 F-1

Super, methinks you don't remember half the stuff you forgot. Everything was in short supply after the war, including bumpers, as many Fords were delivered with temporary 2x4's in place of bumpers. White Wall tires were totally non-existent, even for the new '46 that was presented to President Truman in July of '45. You are right about accessories making up for lost profits, though. You are right about my memory, Alan. Somedays it is as rusty as the underside of some of our cars! There are photos in Lorin Sorensen's wonderful books of cars with wooden bumpers. The sale of '46 vehicles to the public was delayed for months because the OPA ruled that the cars had to be sold for a figure below the actual production cost. I doubt we would have had sun visors, curb feelers, or the other host of non-regulated accessories, otherwise. I put the wide whites on my '47 because I like them, even though they were not so equipped originally. It is interesting that tires have undergone such changes ovr the years, from wide to narrow whites, on to red bands, then raised white letters, and now to tires so narrow that nothing can be added. Who would have thought that the 19 inch Model A size would re emerge in this day and age? I guess "what goes around......". (No pun).

They also went from floor shifts to column shifts and back to the floor! I had a kid (20 something) that saw my '51 F-1 and asked me what the lever was sticking out of the steering column! Richard
