I have a 1941 ford 6 cylinder flathead engine that I am restoring. I have the engine stripped down completely except for the camshaft valves and valve lifters. I can only get the cam to slide out forward about 1/2 inch then comes to a dead stop. It is not catching on any lifters or fuel pump lobe or anything else that I can see. Any suggestions would be great Thanks..

Located the problem Cam main bearing is striking the bottom of the valve lifter when sliding out the camshaft Hard to see without good lighting Looks like all valve push rods have to be removed. Very tough getting those bushing retainers and valve guides out I can compress the spring but retainers still will not pull out.

As I remember, these engines used the mushroom stem valves and 2 piece guides, the guides have to be pressed down to remove the retainers. I'm not sure if a v8 type valve tool will work on a 6cly. Maybe someone will chime in.

Yes the valves are the mushroom type and the guides are split. My problem is trying to get the guide retainer out. It is recessed down and the valve guide needs to be moved down a fraction of and inch to be able to pull out the retainer.

Look through the springs and you will see a groove in each half of the guides. You will need a tool that will go into these grooves so you can pry the guides down, Sometimes you have to use a penetrant and soak them for a while. Sometimes you have to use more drastic measures. Most ford suppliers carry this tool. You might call Van Pelts and see if a v8 tool will work ask what other suggestions they might have.

Thank you for the info. With good lighting and a sharp eye I can see the groove. Now just have to find a supplier with that tool. Will try Van Pelt and see what the have Thanks..
