Topic: 1939 Mercury convertible

mercury39    -- 03-16-2016 @ 7:34 AM
Have owned a 39 Merc coupe for over 35 years, that one is in South America, where I am from, dry climate, average temp 75 all year around so well preserved and labor is cheap.

Now living in South Florida, could not keep still so bought a convertible and, well, thought it was in fair condition but the more I dig in might of gotten more than I can handle. Rusty floor pans, trunk, and bottom sides.

Any one can advise a good shop or where I can source floor pans.

Also, pulled the muffler as it was in bad shape, thought it would be easy to source at Carpenter or Drake, finding this is not the case as has been discontinued and now going from a 60-70 dollar fix to 400 at Waldrons. Any advise as to where to get the 91A5230

  Welcome to the Forum.

The correct muffler for your Mercury is 99A-5230. This muffler was used on the 39-41 Mercury and the 1941 Ford.

No one reproduces this muffler. If you are fixing up the car for street use, you have the option of oredering a complete system from Waldren for about $300 + shipping, Putting on one Smitty for around $40 for the 26 inch one.

Bob Drake lists the 91A-5230 in his catalog, you can use it with extensions.

  Thanks TomO

Bob Drake does not carry or is out of stock on the 91A

Do you have specs on the 99A, have a real good shop that may be able to reproduce.

Mercury 39: I have a NOS 1941 Ford L6 muffler that might be a good place to start for a muffler for your 39 Merc. Attached is a sketch of the dimensions. It has domed ends that are unique to the original muffler Ford made. I am not sure what a 39 Merc muffler looks like. Let me know if this will help. Bill Large 586-677-4790 MI

You might try Paul Bradley for the floor pans. Not sure if he has Mercury. Ford ones fit great!

I was lucky enough to find a NOS Mercury muffler at the Hershey swap meet two years ago - prior to that I had a local metal spinner make ends for a modern one with the Ford script.just keep looking.

Mercury repro floors are not available at this time.
The 1939 Mercury floor swages could be made by any competent panel shop.
Try a Tractor or agriculture machine muffler for your car - you should be able to get something for around $50.
