Apologize for such a dumb question.......I just acquired an old Merc and am new to the Forum But I cant figure out what the small red light is at the top right of my speedo. '48 Merc, all stock It's on whenever the lights are on---parking or headlights Is it simply to tell you the lights are on, or am I missing something??

On 1940 Fords the small red light is illuminated when the headlight high beams are on.

Here are some pix of my speedo The red light on the left side is for the High Beams, and goes on/off like it should The red light on the right, next to the "60" is the mystery Maybe its the indicator for Fog Lights (which I don't have) & someone put an illumination bulb in the wrong hole? Would be great to have an Owners Manual that shows me what all the indicator lights are for Thanks for your help This message was edited by MNSubbie on 12-29-22 @ 7:53 AM

I have no idea why you would need an reminder that you lights are on or if that is the purpose of the light. Here is a link to where you can purchase a reprint of the owner's manual. https://cgfordparts.com/owners-manual-48-mercury-120481 Tom

The 46-48 Mercury had turn signals kits that the dealer could install. They are very rare to find them today. The red indicator bulb near the 60 mph location was used to indicate the turn signals were in use. They only used one indicator, so you could not tell if you were signaling right or left. My 48 Mercury has this kit installed. I have no idea why your light stays on with the lights. If your column the turn signal lever built into the steering column, you may have the kit too. If you need more info, let me know. Bill Large 586-677-4790 Detroit

Thank you, Bill. That makes a lot of sense----appreciate your expertise. Now I should be able to sleep at night

I have a copy of the install instructions for the turn signal kit. On the Mercury when installing the kit they used the two red lights for the left and right turn indicators. They then drilled a hole above the instrument cluster and added another jewel there for the high beam indicator.

Not totally true. I have a copy of the original turn signal installation sheet. For the 42-48 Mercury only they drilled another hole in the dash above/ install another jewel there to move the high beam bulb to. They then used the two red jewels in the dash for the left and right turn signal indicators.
