I am aware that most oil on the shelf doesn't have zinc. I have bought Valvoline ZR1 20w50 which contains zinc for my high horse Vette engine. Would this also be useful for my flathead engine ? Gene Talley

Valvoline VR-1 SAE 20W50 should work fine in your flathead V-8 at temperatures above freezing.

Volumes have been written on this topic. The bottom line from what I've read is that engines with high valve spring pressure need more Zinc than others to help fight the friction created by the extra pressure put on the camshaft. Our low compression, low valve spring pressure flatheads need some Zinc but not quite as much. In fact, in a recent article it was stated that too much Zinc can be harmful. The Valvoline racing oil you mention is more than adequate.
