Topic: 1940 Starter locked up

classiclover    -- 05-18-2025 @ 4:39 AM
I just tried to start my 40 and it was turning over as t should. It had been sitting for a while, so I had the choke on. It turned it over for about 10 sec's and then it locked up. When I push the start button all I hear is the clicking sond. Engine won't turn at all. I think the Bendix gear might be stuck. Anybody suggest a way to free it up without dropping the starter motor. Thanks much

The starter solenoid may be picking up giving the clicking noise but not applying battery power to the starter motor. Check.

You may have just run the battery down to the point where it doesn't have enough voltage to turn the starter motor.
Charge the battery then use some starting fluid to get the engine to start up and run.
If the engine won't at least try to start when cranking with the use of starter fluid, you have an ignition system problem.

Thanks to all for the help. I just spent a couple hours chasing down grounding issues with a very knowledgeable friend. Long story short it turned out to be a grounding problem with the starter button. Cleaned it up and I am back in business. I am learning that majority of my elecc issues are grounding related

Thanks for the follow-up post to let us know what you found.

I experienced that with an aftermarket push button. They are known to make poor contact to ground on the dashboard. Solenoid clicks like a weak battery, but in this case is weak path to ground at the push button.

first thing i would do is test whether or not the starter is locked up or not. to do that i'd try to turn the engine over by hand using the handcrank if you've got one, or the fan or putting it in gear and pushing.

depending on the result's problem diagnosis would vary quite a bit, i would think.
