1940 Ford Question regarding ignition wires... The stock ignition wires come with the brass contacts that snap into the inner distributor cap loose. I have always just threaded the wire through the hole in the contact and snapped the wire/contact into the inner cap. Should these be soldered?

If you mean soldered to the cap, no, but soldering wires to thier contacts is, I believe, a good practice. Also, all your bullet connectors should be soldered, as those will not normally be opened once installed. Alan

Thank you all for the answers! I had the distributor off to change all of the gaskets today, including the rubber boots that cover the ignition wires between the conduits and the outer distributor caps. In order to change the boots, I had to remove the ignition wires from the inner caps. I thought that, while I was in there I would solder the contacts on to the ends of the wires. Now comes the part where I feel foolish (especially as I had asked the question publicly)-I had already soldered the contacts to the ends of the wires. Granted it was 23 years ago, but I thought I would have remembered that (I am getting old-what am I saying-I AM OLD!). ford38v8, Again, thank you for your answer. My apologies for addressing you as "sir." Would "Your Eminence" work? Either way I am grateful for your help. Mike, Thank you as always! I have one more question for you-were the original gaskets between the inner and outer caps and the gasket under the coil cork? I have two sets of repro gaskets, both of which are cork. I installed one set of them, but would like to know if they would have been made from some other material from the factory (and therefore know whether or not I should replace them for being the incorrect type).
