New to forum and considering buying an unrestored 40sedan. The fellow had intentions of restoring it but lost interest (28yrs ago) he also can't remember where all parts are. My question is; is it worth buying and bringing it back to the road ? Are parts and glass still available.

I can tell you from extensive personal experience that this particular car is not worth much at all. It is a parts car. To just get this car on the road under its own power will likely cost you way more than simply buying a nice driving tudor. For around $20k, you can find an extremely nice sedan. Yes, many will be asking much more but they won't be selling at higher asking prices. Lots of guys have not kept abreast of current markets and / or don't want to accept the reality. That's what I needed to hear! Based on your answer the seller wants what he paid for it 28yrs ago. $2000.00 Can you make that money back and then some?or is it best to leave that dog lay. Respect your input. Thank you

My biggest concerns are getting glass for it. I don't know if I parted it out based off your response I could make that $2000.00 back. I would hate to see it go to the junk if other 40 enthusiasts could use the parts or take the whole car. I would love to bring it back to life,but based off your response, I should take your advise. Thank you as always

There is probably $2000 worth of parts there depending on the condition of the parts. Unless you can do most of the work yourself trying to restore the car would be a money pit. Paint jobs today are very expensive and upholstery is also expensive. those two items together could easily cost $20,000. If you can buy a good one already done for that $20,000 you can drive it today rather than 5-10 years from now. If it was me I would offer 1200 for the car and you would make money on parting it out. Hello Curious 40, I bought a '40 fordor a few years ago. It appeared to be in similar condition as the one pictured, except the engine was a good shape. I've got about $17k involved; did all my own work. It was fun, except the headliner. Glass was available; 12 pieces. I think I paid $700-800. I've had it 4-5 years now; glass still looks great. Sanders Reproduction Glass in Oregon. An alternative to that is you can get glass templates from Bob Drake and have a local shop cut the glass for you. Many vendors advertise in the V-8 Times magazine. If you are not a V-8 Club member I would recommend that you join to get the magazine.

Good morning-- Sanders Reproduction Glass' website is "www.sandersreproductionglass.com". It should answer all your questions. Fine folks. I got the glass from them for my 40 Sedan - great job! Website says they are located in Vancouver, WA. I also found a location for them in Hillsboro, OR. Doesn't really matter. Anyway, give them a call and they can help you out. Good Luck Tom

Thank you everyone for the information. The engine head has 59A on it. Is that condosive to the year 1940? It has a sticker tag on side of engine that I can barely make out. From what I can gather it may say " international rebuild " around the top and "spitfire" across the bottom. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
