Topic: Wind up clock

Anyone with tips or experience here?

The clock spins, you can adjust the time. it does not seem to want to wind.
I think this is the last part of the original systems that is not fully functional and I want it to be.
I plan to take it back apart and clean/lube it. hope I can get that winding mechanism moving.

Been working on other car projects, and moving back to the '40 the last 2 weeks reminds me just how much fun I have with this car every time I wrench or drive it.

Not certain about a '40, but my New Haven wind up clock in my '38 used the same internal mechanism as the New Haven pocket watches. In any case, any clock repair shop can service your clock.

Alan, you are spot on. The '40 clock is nearly identical in "build" as your '38.

If the tension on the winding mechanism does not increase and maybe the clock runs for a short time or not at all. It is possible the main spring is broken. Appears you need some service.

I just bought my first 40 coupe and it has the clock. It works but I haven't yet found the right position of that slider on the back to make it keep accurate time. I'm assuming that slider is a speed control. Do I assume correctly? Also, how often should we have to wind it, if it's working properly?

Happy motoring, Gregory

if the clock is over wound,
with clock removed, rock the clock back and forth. and see if it starts ticking,
the escapment wheel is the one that rock back a forth. releases the spring tension,
I usually spray with wd40, to make sure it is lubricated,
hope this helps 37 Ragtopman , Maine
I cannot tell you how many I repaired doing this

Just cleaned and oiled the clock in my '41 super deluxe convertible. Same description, did not want to wind, but that was because it was totally wound. Pulled it out, opened case. Used canned air, then wd40, it started up after the lubrication and now runs for 4 days. I had bought an extra off eBay to test how to fix, it runs great too now.
